中學時代的魏廷乘，是典型放牛班的“壞學生”，年年名列全級後10名！不愛讀書，逃學、抽煙、飆車、打架、賭博卻樣樣幹齊。

直到有一天……他患上一種不知名的病，全身關節和骨頭痠痛難當，在床上躺了整整兩年，全身動彈不得。

他在一次迷迷糊糊中意識到：“我一輩子的人生不能就這樣子混沌過下去。”

於是他想起小時候最愛的畫畫。找了間藝術學院來唸，開始了他嶄新的人生……

“生活要是太簡單，就不好玩了！”電影《如果．愛》女主角周迅在戲中有這樣一句對白。平平無奇的人生顯然乏味，然而像達爾尚美術學院院長魏廷乘那樣，人生像電影般跌宕起伏，也未免太神奇了。

魏廷乘出生於北馬檳城爪夷的華都新村，是典型放牛班的“壞學生”，全級四百多人，後10名排行榜上年年有他的名字！可是偏偏，小學時他年年名列前三名，年年皆是模範生，也是最佳運動員。十五、六歲的青春叛逆期，他“變壞”了！他變壞的原因非常典型，正是“誤交損友”──逃學、抽煙、飆車、打架、賭博……沒一樣他沒試過。

“中一時我就無駕照非法駛電單車，中三那年強迫父親給我買一輛最流行的大型電單車，父親不肯，我天天用飛標丟爸爸，丟到他‘投降’為止。多壞啊，你看？”16年後，魏廷乘帶愧疚的口吻，表達對父親的感恩。

那時，他飛車是村裡出了名的。記得有一回，他進了SRP考場（現在的PMR），發現忘了帶身份證，8點的考試，7時45分他轉身飛車回家，來回半小時的車程，考試開場前，他就安安穩穩、氣定神閒的回到位子上。

赴台得病，浴火重生

父母親為這個“無藥可救”的孩子傷透腦筋，也無計可施，於是在魏廷乘中學畢業那年，決定孤注一擲，把他送去台灣，趕他離開村子到台灣去唸書，希望這個孩子或許可以找到一條生路。

“那時的我對讀書哪裡有興趣？去台灣兩年，就一直在打工，打工賺來的錢周末就去尋歡作樂，花個清光！”

其中有一次在鍍鋼廠工作，那些化學藥物造成副作用，他因此得了不知名的病，全身關節和骨頭痠痛難當。兩年後回馬，骨瘦如柴，一拐一拐走出機場時，媽媽差點也認不得他了。回馬後兩年，在床上足足躺了兩年，一動也不能動。父母兄姐為他求神拜佛、拜訪名醫，就是找不到病因，那時他真的以為自己會這樣死去！

最後被診斷出是血清中毒。那年他21歲。書沒讀幾本，當然字也就沒多認識幾個，更是身無一技之長，只能到紅泥山當看守。然後在迷迷糊糊中他意識到：“我一輩子的人生不能就這樣子混沌過下去。”

於是他想起小時候最愛的畫畫。“小時候我就很會畫漫畫，還以每本兩角錢賣給同學。”就這樣他到檳城找了間藝術學院，唸不到一年，他覺得沒什么好學了，就轉到吉隆坡來找新學校，輾轉轉到The One學院。也就是從這裡，他開始了他的人生。

成功關鍵：規律時間表

第一天上課，學校給新生安排了一場激勵課程，主講老師黃樹容講的成功學習法非常簡單、老套，但是魏廷乘卻用心記牢，當下決定依做。這方法是什么呢？不是別的，正是定作“每日時間表”。

“我把每天的時間表安排得滿滿的，下課後沖涼吃飯，4點到6點要做功課、6點停一個小時看電視，看完後吃晚餐半小時，回來繼續做功課……

“這樣規律的時間表，我足足嚴守了兩年，出奇的自律。”

兩年後搬離租房處時，他平日正襟危坐唸書的地磚被磨淺了，還出現了一對腳印，所謂滴水穿石，這可是歷久見功呢！

院長提拔，勤學英語

The One學院院長許德勝看見了這位年輕人，有心提拔他，在他畢業後聘任他當講師，以及到廣告工作室任職。

“我初中起就沒有唸書，不只英文超爛，其他科目都不好，還好我學的是商業插畫系，畫得好就好。還記得老師那時讚我‘Your work is brilliant!’可是我都不知道老師在講什麼。

“第一天擔任講師授課，我不敢訴父母親，心想就算我告訴他們，他們也絕對不會相信，這個幾乎沒有藥救的孩子怎麼可能會教書？”執教半年以後，他才告訴家人，家人當然難以置信！

一句英語也不會的魏廷乘，知道一定要克服。他用了自己也認為是最“老土”的方法──聽、背。每天騎電單車上班的路上，他就聽英語學習卡帶，抄厚厚的生字筆記時時背誦（連上廁所時也背），同時他也積極閱讀感興趣的英語攝影雜誌。

“上中文班沒問題，必須用英語上課時，我就試‘背課’，發現可行，這個方法好，就這樣慢慢學起。老實說，我學英文也是蠻辛苦的，一直到今天還在學。”

後來，魏廷乘和7位志同道合的朋友決定合資開學院，大家都是白手起家的年輕人，用了一年的時間拼命接廣告工作，大伙兒下班後在大本營畫至凌晨。一兩年時間，合伙籌了第一筆資本，設了第一間公司。11年後，他們共設了4間公司，即廣告公司、地產公司、設計公司及藝術學院。

敢想、敢做

“我天生就有一種特質，只要我想要做的，就一定做得到。小學時我想要考第一名，就真的考了第一名。我想要跳遠跳最遠，就真的跳最遠。去台灣我拜師學唱歌，場場比賽都拿冠軍，還差一點出唱片！看見人家霹靂舞超酷，我也去學，而且要跳到最好。全都只是因為，我想要！”

於是，魏廷乘帶這種可引向善、亦可導往沉淪的人格特質，帶少年判逆期後對人生醒悟的決心，他付出了努力和學習的毅力，今天成為一家學術學院的院長，學院有7位股東，用了11年時間，買下14間店面，學校將在不久後遷入新校址。

他一直堅持相信：“本性善良的‘壞孩子’，總有出頭天！”
同時，他也一直堅持，要辦一間一流，但學費不貴的學校，讓那些一直想追求夢想，而又沒有能力的學生，有個實現夢想的機會！

Celebrating Malaysia’s 50th Year of Independence and the 50th Year of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and Japan, The Japan Foundation, Kuala Lumpur and The Annexe, Central Market proudly present ‘Sharing Space – Contemporary Photography of Malaysia + Japan’ Exhibition.

The works by the Japanese artists are part of a touring exhibition titled “Counter-Photography”, curated to present 11 noted Japanese photographers: Eikoh Hosoe, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Miho Akioka, Miyuki Ichikawa, Akiko Sugiyama, Chie Yasuda, Kazuo Katase, Hiroko Inoue, Tomoko Yoneda, Tomoaki Ishihara, Michihiro Shimabuku. The exhibition is curated by Yuri Mitsuka, curator of the Shoto Museum of Art. The exhibition in Malaysia is presented by Japan Foundation, KL.

The Annexe, Central Market saw this as an opportunity to share its new gallery and present the works of Malaysian contemporary photographers alongside with the Japanese photographers. The Malaysian photographers are: Bernice Chauly, Sharon Lam, Tan Chee Hon, Caecar Chong, Nazim Esa, Minstrel Kuik, Eiffel Chong and Pang Khee Teik (who as Arts Programme Director of The Annexe, Central Market, is also the curator of this exhibition). The works presented by the Malaysian photographers are new and half of them are being produced specifically for this exhibition.

This is not my desktop. This is a web layout.
Guess this will be one of the most memorable weblayout that i ever see. Not perfectly done but the idea is fun to play with. I guess it will be even impressive if they can expand the idea more, with adding interactivity to others buttons like "My computer", "start" or even time bar, to make a fully functional "desktop", but come with some creative and fun features.

The whole idea can be much much much more fun then this execution, but i would admit, this layout really trigger me alots of inspiration.

coca-cola? mcdonalds? pepi? nike? what else?

This ad is brilliant, in showing the attitude of coca-cola especially in hiding the name if the brand (which really going contrary with ad rules). But seriously i don't understand the chose of the typeface of "enjoy". it ruin this ad.

Goodbye FreeHand. But is Illustrator Enough?

In May of 2007 Adobe finally admitted what we've known for a while — FreeHand is dead. Adobe will no longer update or patch FreeHand for new operating systems or hardware (such as Intel Macs). Adobe has created several migration guides to help long-time FreeHand users move over to Adobe Illustrator instead.

But here's the problem: If you've spent the last ten years designing and working in FreeHand, then Illustrator may be the wrong place for you to switch to. Many die-hard FreeHand users will be far better served switching to Adobe InDesign instead. Yet as far as we've found, no one has created a good resource to help designers migrate from Freehand to InDesign.

They have few tutorials for people who want to migrate from Freeland to Indesign/Illustrator.
Kinda cool.

I still remember freehand is the very very first design software that i ever learn (except that abit self-learning of Photoshop), and i don't know what happened and since when i start to catch up with illustrator. By the way, bye bye freehand :).

Technology changes. People make technology changes, and people follows. who you are?

Was curious about their concept design and browse more and i was catch by this, boundaries, Here is the brief:

We broke the wall between common and private space, and we made this necessary line, elastic by tightening up a partition made up of latex between two layers of liycra. By making this line flexible a new way to share objects and space is born. The elasticity of this membrane lets reach balance between common and private zone: there are infinities combinations that come from personal demands and attitudes. There's an interesting "game" that comes from crossing off the frontiers to common space. To front personal necessity having more private space, you can push an object in "public territory", creating over the lycra membrane a new support usefull for everybody. This elastic wall produces an auto-regulation.

Who don't like more space? especially when i only afford to buy such a small tiny house.
By the way, i was truly attracted by this concept, just wonder about the execution, the material and the practical usage. Will the wall now become like...weird partition?
Will it be easily spoilt if i keep changing the position? :P.

Lots more to consider, but i really would like to see the prototype of this design.

Challenge
Artesanos Camiseros tailors shirts for people with problematic body shapes, Out challege was to gain attention and encourage potential customers to visit the store and have a first shirt made.

Strategy
We identifed human-shaped objects in public places near major financial institutions (UBS, Credit Suisse) and challenged our client to make shirts for them. We then staged fitting sessions and attached the removable tags that doubled as 10% discount coupons.

Result
The campain resulted in a marked increase in foot traffic and sales. They also plan on staging these events every seasons.

Haha, cute! remind me how i used to take every little little thing around as a "life", my car has a name and he talks, my camera has a name as well, and now, all of them have to wear shirt! cute!

I am sure this campaign will gain attention, take a look with the one in the fountain :P funny....

I have a vivid memory where i read about a story, or a movie or a drama or anything, just a short story in my mind, that a father canes his little kid just he drawn some funny character that looks like aliens. He claims the child don't know how to draw at all, then he send the kid to a drawing learning studio, to "learn how to draw properly, then the art teacher disallow the kid to draw alien, to paint trees into red and to draw 10 legs for the handsome man.

This will be a common story that happen everyday in our life, where parents always wish their kid to draw "properly", human that look like a human, cat that look like a cat. My art teacher do wanted me to do so when i am young. i remember him.

Then i always like kid's drawing, for me, they're the most creative person in the world. Those alien thingy, red trees, for me, is real creativity.

So, now, this prove to those "parent", stopping your son and daughter to draw creativity, you might kill a future Picasso.

I love this project so much, but i wonder who made this. a big clap ya.

Nobody knew quite what to expect when, in a rare joint meeting Wednesday, Microsoft chairman Bill Gates and Apple CEO Steve Jobs sat down together for an interview at the fifth annual All Things Digital Conference. The two technology pioneers and fierce competitors, after all, hadn't exactly been sending each other mash notes lately. Gates had complained to NEWSWEEK in January about Apple's television ad campaign that unfavorably compare PCs to Macs, asking rhetorically if being cool meant you didn't have to tell the truth. And just a few hours before their evening meeting at the Carlsbad, Calif., conference, Jobs was taking swipes at Microsoft. When Apple wrote its iTunes application for Windows, he told attendees earlier that day, "it was like offering glasses of ice water to people in hell."

No offend to PC guy or MR.BILL GATES, when i first click in the interview news page, i found it is coincidentally similar of the photo taken with the famous "i am a pc, i am a mac" ad. Funny huh?

Watch the tvc series pf "i am a pc, i am a mac", if you want to see how terrible the competition between Microsoft and apple :). it might let you have a great laughing session.

But by the way, i don't support or degrade every each of them, for me Bills Gates and Steve Jobs are both big person that worth my admiration. and i used pc :P even i wish i have a mac. haha.

The seemingly empty landscape of the Kalahari Desert is full of clues to the whereabouts of potential prey for these San Bushmen hunters. Bushmen can read the desert like a book, studying droppings, tree markings, and hoof prints to determine an animal's species, gender, and age. They can estimate when an animal has passed through a certain area by the time it takes termites to rebuild a nest that’s been trampled, or a blade of grass to spring back upright, or a spider to repair its cobweb.

Drivers stand ready amid a fleet of rickshaws in Antsirabe, Madagascar. Rickshaws are known here by the French pousse-pousse, which translates to "push-push," though "pull-pull" would seem to be more appropriate.

Antsirabe's streets teem with these colorfully painted buggies, and even somewhat long trips earn pullers only pennies. So competition for patrons is fierce, and visitors here are frequently swarmed by solicitous drivers.

Stolid apartment buildings rise from the snow-covered permafrost in Novyy Urengoy, Russia. The buildings house workers at what was once the world's highest-producing natural gas field. After more than 30 years of operation, it's still one of the largest.

Novyy Urengoy is one of hundreds of industrial towns built, seemingly overnight, during the Soviet era to support workers who tap Siberia's many natural resources. Such development on the tundra has presented challenges for Russia, including buildings that crack or collapse under sagging permafrost and the displacement of indigenous cultures.

Hungry tigers stand on display atop an SUV in Seoul, South Korea's Everland Resort amusement park. The park's tigers are fed chunks of meat dangled from a tour bus so sightseers can view the staged carnage up close.

Of the eight known tiger subspecies only five remain. Three—the Caspian, Bali, and Javan—became extinct during the 20th century. The extant species—Bengal, South China, Indochinese, Sumatran, and Siberian—number only about 5,000 to 7,000 individuals combined, and all are endangered.

Wiry bloom stalks from two sotol plants lean toward sunlight that streams through a break in the clouds in the Maderas del Carmen Protected Area. The mountainous park in Mexico's Coahuila State joins with Big Bend National Park on the U.S. side of the Rio Grande.

Sotol is a favorite snack of black bears, and its blooms attract swarms of flying insects including flies, bees, and butterflies. Juice from the stem is somewhat sweet and can be pressed and fermented to make the fiery liquor mescal de sotol.

A multi-colored scallop sits open-mouthed on a reef off the Yap Islands in Micronesia. Unlike most mollusks, which tend to anchor themselves in colonies and stay put, scallops have the gift of locomotion. They move in short spurts by closing their mantle quickly, ejecting water and jet-propelling themselves backwards.

Scallops also have the distinction of eyesight. Their eyes, sometimes numbering more than a hundred, are quite sophisticated, each with a lens, retina, and optic nerve. These tiny peepers line the upper part of the mantle (seen as orange dots on this specimen) and work together to detect shadows and movements.

Skiers dot the slopes in this night view of the Happo-One Ski Resort in the Japan Alps' Hida Range near Tokyo, Japan.

Skiing was brought to Japan in 1911 when the imperial general staff asked the Austrian Army for help training ski troops. The officer dispatched by Vienna brought his own skis, equipped with modern bindings. Within four weeks, Japan's imperial armory in Tokyo had produced 30 perfect replicas of the bindings and delivered them to the country's first ski-infantry division.

Roads on Hawaii’s Big Island are often flanked with miles of "Island graffiti," like this love note. Instead of spray paint though, bits of white coral harvested from local beaches are arranged into messages, which seem to glow against the island's black lava expanses.

But tourists beware: Removing the coral from beaches is illegal. And disturbing an already-posted message is considered rude and supposedly brings bad luck.

Google launched its new function of 360degree panoramic street view of US and this new feature brought a lots of issues and discussion in privacy and human right :). I read the news and it trigger my interest to try out this new feature even thought it's not even available in Malaysia.

Candid photos with Google's map feature raise privacy issue

SAN FRANCISCO -- Google bills the latest twist on its online maps as "Street View," but it looks a bit like "Candid Camera" as you cruise through the panorama of pictures that capture fleeting moments in neighborhoods scattered across the country.

In San Francisco, there's a man picking his nose on a street corner and a guy scaling the outside of an apartment building, perhaps just for fun or maybe for some more sinister purpose.

At Stanford University, there's the titillation of a couple coeds sunbathing in their bikinis.

In Miami, there's a group of protesters carrying signs outside an abortion clinic. In other cities, you can see men entering adult bookstores or leaving strip joints.

Potentially embarrassing scenes like these are raising questions about whether the Internet's leading search engine has gone too far in its latest attempt to make the world a more accessible -- and transparent -- place.

"Everyone expects a certain level of anonymity as they move about their daily lives," said Kevin Bankston, a staff attorney for the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a group devoted to protecting people's rights on the Internet. "There is a certain 'ick' factor here."

Google introduced Street View on its maps for the San Francisco Bay area, New York, Las Vegas, Denver and Miami this week. The Mountain View, Calif., company plans to expand the service to other U.S. cities and other countries.

The feature provides high-resolution photos to enable street-level tours so users can get a more realistic, 360-degree look at locations. To guard against privacy intrusions, Google said all the photos were taken from vehicles driving along public streets. The photos will be periodically updated.

"This imagery is no different from what any person can readily capture or see walking down the street," Google spokeswoman Megan Quinn said in a statement.

Amazon.com launched a similar mapping feature in January 2005 on a search engine called A9.com. That search engine's former chief executive, Udi Manber, now works for Google. And Microsoft began displaying street-level pictures on its online maps for San Francisco and Seattle late last year.

A9's photographic maps, which were abandoned last year, raised privacy concerns about women being seen entering domestic violence shelters.

Google tried to identify potentially sensitive locations by contacting the Safety Net Project at the National Network to End Domestic Violence.

Google also offers a "help" button to provide a link for users to request the removal of an image that is objectionable or clearly identifies a person who doesn't want to be included. Company spokeswoman Victoria Grand said Google has fielded "very few" removal requests so far.

Because Google's street-level pictures were taken in public places, the company appears to be on solid legal ground, Bankston said.

But he worries that some people in need of psychological or medical help won't seek treatment for fear of being caught in the cross-hairs of Google's cameras.

"There's a distinction between what Google has a legal right to do and what is the responsible thing to do," Bankston said.

Isn't this cool, so now you can "explore" the whole world (if it is available in whole world) without leaving your room? But i guess if you're the one being shot and put on web when you're doing funny stuff, you won't be smiling here.

Again, the privacy issue being challenge.

By the way, even google bought this feature to Malaysia, we the user in Malaysia can't probably use it "happily" tho, since streamyx load it so damn slow. (complain again, hiah).

By the way, i am happy to see, the street view feature was done in Flash.

Microsoft Surface is a forthcoming product from Microsoft which is developed as a software and hardware combination technology that allows a user, or multiple users, to manipulate digital content by the use of natural motions, hand gestures, or physical objects.

Surface is essentially a Windows Vista PC tucked inside a black table base, topped with a 30-inch touchscreen in a clear acrylic frame. Five cameras that can sense nearby objects are mounted beneath the screen. Users can interact with the machine by touching or dragging their fingertips and objects such as paintbrushes across the screen, or by setting real-world items tagged with special bar-code labels on top of it.

Surface can also respond to more than one touch at a time. During a demonstration with a reporter, Mark Bolger, the Surface Computing group's marketing director, "dipped" his finger in an on-screen paint palette, then dragged it across the screen to draw a smiley face. Then he used all 10 fingers at once to give the face a full head of hair.

In addition to recognizing finger movements, Microsoft Surface can also identify physical objects that have bar-code-like tags. Microsoft says that when a diner sets down a wine glass, for example, the table can automatically offer additional wine choices tailored to the dinner being eaten.

Prices will reportedly be $5,000 to $10,000 per unit. However Microsoft said it expects prices to drop enough to make consumer versions feasible in 3 to 5 years.

The machines, which Microsoft debuted 5/30/2007 at a technology conference in Carlsbad, Calif., are set to arrive in November in T-Mobile USA stores and properties owned by Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc. and Harrah's Entertainment Inc.

So, the next generation of computer came. isn't it? i simply love this love this and love this and i want it to sit in my future living room and i can imagine how this will change the world in the future. Just a little wonder, will it hard to do work? :|, guess until now it will just serve as entertainment and domestic usage ya.

One thing that amazed me is, i only like saw multi-touch screen like one and half year back, that time it is a big wow to me, and one year after that, apple make it into iphone, and now, Microsoft make this, surface. How fast they react, and how fast they develop..

Question, what i had done in this one and half year?

See this, it is really..amazing, multi-touch screen might not be new to you, but i seriously love the object recognition feature, no more MEMORY CARD READER and wires and cables next time! i hate wire btw.

Kuan TeckHarn, or Kuanth as he is more commonly known, is a designer, image-maker, and a self-professed daydreamer who is interested in all things beautiful.

Kuanth counts art and design as his absolute passion. Having worked as a senior graphic designer in the publishing industry for 5 years and then a year in advertising, he has gained exposure to all aspects of design work. In 2002, Kuanth left the agency to become a freelance illustrator, after he got his first big break from an assignment with Hong Kong pop magazine Amoeba.

Having graduated from The One Academy in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, with a major in Graphic Design and Advertising, the 30yr old artist is a veteran globetrotter with his freelance and personal projects.
